Tennis Championships 2008

The development of tennis:

Tennis originated in the United Kingdom dating back to the late 19th century. The game had become popular among the wealthy English people. Later on in history and until today, tennis has developed into a worldwide Olympic sport loved by many, regardless of financial class or race.  Tennis has kept its original structure untouched since the 1890s, although slight additions have been made.

How does it work?
The game can be played either between two players or between two sets of teams with each team consisting of two players. The players each have a racquet that is used to strike a ball over the net into the rival's court.

It is only natural that such a popular game worldwide will have its own tennis championships. Therefore, the most important tennis events of the year are called the "Grand Slam", which are a general name for the four tournaments that occur each year.

The Australian Open:
This first tournament of the Grand Slam and is held each year in January at Melbourne Park, Australia. Every year 500 of the best tennis players in the world gather together for the competition. Each tennis player is looking to be the winner of his/her category because of the prestigious title and the generous prize that can collected by the winner (we are talking about millions of dollars). The competitors will compete in their categorized competitions such as Men's and Women's Singles, Men's, Women's, and Mixed Doubles, including Junior and Master's competitions.

The French Open:
Tournoi de Roland-Garros also known as the French Open is the second event in the Grand Slam tournaments. This prestigious game is held between mid May and early June. As its name suggests, the event takes place in Paris, France in a stadium call "Stade de Roland Garros". The French Open has a reputation to be the most challenging and demanding tennis tournament of all four due to the nature of its courts.

Wimbledon:
The Wimbledon tournament is third in line for the Grand Slam championships and it is also the oldest of them all. Wimbledon takes place in the beginning of July and continues for two weeks. Many different tournaments occur simultaneously such as Gentleman's and Lady's Singles and Doubles and Mixed Doubles. In addition there is a unique competition that is set up especially for handicapped players in wheelchairs. The competition is judged by a special committee associated to the "Lawn Tennis Association".

The U.S. Open:
The fourth and final event of the Grand Slam is the U.S. Open. As its name reveals, the contest takes place in the United States in the Flushing Meadows National Tennis Center in Queens, NY. The games are played towards the end of August and the beginning of September, for a period of two weeks. The U.S. Open has a contest suited for handicapped players and games that occur simultaneously such as Gentleman's and Lady's Singles and Doubles and Mixed Doubles similar to Wimbledon.
