Golf Events 2008

Some history about Golf:

Golf has been played around the world for many centuries dating back to 1456. The first golf game was documented by the Edinburgh Burgess Golfing Society (today known as the Royal Burgess Golfing Society) in Edinburgh, Scotland. Since the Middle Ages golf has made a far and impressive journey to the game of golf as we know it today.

Golf is a sport that is very popular in many different countries. The way it is played is quite simple. The golf player with assistance of several types of golf clubs is needed to hit a ball on the golf course into its hole, trying to use as little strokes as possible.

Golf events highlights of the year:

Major Golf Championships (the Majors):
The "Major Championships" of the year are also known as the "Majors". These are four championships played in 2008 and are the most prestigious of professional golf tournaments.

The Masters:
The Masters is the first of the four major championships of the year held for men. It begins in the first week of April and always takes place at the same location. It is a private golf club named "Augusta National Golf Club" in Georgia, US. The Masters was created by two Americans: Clifford Roberts a golf administrator and Bobby Jones an amateur golf player considered to be a legend for competing on national and international levels.
Today the Masters are an official Money Event on the PGA Tour, the PGA European Tour and the Japan Golf Tour. Winning the Masters will open doors that most golfers can only dream about, since the winner will be invited to the next other three Majors over the course of five years.  The 2008 champion of the Masters is golfer Trevor Immelman.

The United States Open Championship (U.S. Open Golf):
This golf tournament occurs in mid June in the US and is organized by the US Golf Association. It is the second game in the major championships which appears on the official schedule of the PGA and European Tours. Starting this year, the US Open Golf will be officially a Money Event as well as on the Asian tour. This specific tournament is considered to be the most difficult due to the scoring. The game is open to any professional or amateur of any age and citizenship that wish to compete.

The Open Championships (British Open Golf):
This is the third tournament of the Championships and occurs towards the end of July. Known to be the oldest of the four, it is the only major that is held outside of the US. Every year the location of the tournament rotates between nine of the most prestigious golf clubs in the UK. The Open Golf is featured on the PGA Tour and on the official Money List.

PGA Championships:
The last of the four games is set up by the Professional Golfers Association of America. Like all three tournaments prior to it, the PGA is also part of the PGA Tour. The game takes place at the end of August and the winner of the year in invited to play in the other three majors.
